Proudly Nigerian travel agency Travel Next Door is calling on all culture lovers for a day visit to the country home of legendary thespian, filmmaker and musician, Late Hubert Ogunde, father of contemporary Yoruba theatre.

The cultural tour is scheduled for Saturday December 19th, 2015 at Ososa, Ogun State. Visitors will be taken on a tour through his estate and museum housing his paraphernalia, as well as the private apartment where he lived the last 10 years of his life and private dressing rooms containing well preserved costumes worn by the actor and others featured in Ogunde’s films.

This guided tour is the first of a continuing series on iconic and cultural personalities in Nigeria. Travel Next Door presents this as an opportunity to honour the life and times of these Nigerians (living or late) who have excelled in their professional career, achieved international acclaim and positive international image for Nigeria.

Other trips already planned include visits to the homes of Pa Demas Nwoko, Pa Gabriel Okara, Prof. Wole Soyinka, Sir Ahmadu Bello, Chinua Acebe and Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, all in different states in Nigeria.

About Hubert Ogunde

The late Ogunde formed the first commercial theatre troupe in Nigeria, producing his first Opera (The Garden of Eden and the throne of God) at the Glover Memorial Hall in 1945. According to a biography by Prof. Ebun Clark, “he was the first to employ actresses as star artistes in their own right”.

In a career that spanned 45 years, he was variously described as “Nigeria’s Theatre King” and the “Father of Nigerian theatre”. He produced several plays, operas, dance-dramas and toured with them across Nigeria and West Africa, including Ivory Coast, Togo and Ghana. He also shot four classic, well received films. Whether on stage or on the streets, Ogunde’s shows often attracted hundreds of audiences.

Before his death in April 1990, aged 74, Ogunde was on the set of the Hollywood film Mister Johnson, which was shot on location in Bauchi State.
