After eight weeks of mentorship classes and intensive development workshops, participants in the project #AFRICA4HER are ready to show the results of participating in the creative workshop in a group exhibition showing 115 works in drawings, paintings, and mixed media art. Participants in the exhibition are between the ages 6 – 25 years.

The workshop was a practical development program with visits to art galleries, art studios, and exhibition centers to expose the participants to a variety of styles and techniques in visual art.  The workshop culminates in the exhibition where works by the girls and young women will be showcased at Terra Kulture Art Gallery, for dialogue, education, entertainment and commercial purpose. A percentage of the proceeds made will go back to the participants, the brains behind the works.

Through the Africa4Her program, girls are exposed to mentoring opportunities, and building leadership and social skills. The art workshop featured spoken word poetry, painting, drawing, graphics design, animation, photography, filmmaking, creative writing, storytelling and digital arts to empower girls and young women respond to global issues. The program provided a platform for community engagement and commitment to raising girls and women of excellence, as the organizers believe that girls have the right to leadership if provided with the opportunity to develop the needed capacity for such position.

#Africa4Her is an initiative for members of the Young African Leaders Network to spur awareness and positive action around women’s issues. It is an important part of the larger group Young African Leaders Initiative launched by President Barack Obama since 2010. “It is a call to action, to invest in girls and women in Africa, to ensure all girls have equal access to opportunities, just as much as boys. A nation simply cannot afford to leave half of its population, half of its innovative potential and tenacity, behind”, says Frank Sellin, Deputy Public Affairs Officer of the U.S. Consulate in Lagos in a congratulatory note to Tender Arts Nigeria on the program.
