iOpenEye Limited, producers of the hit stage play, Hear Word!, in partnership with Etisalat Nigeria, is set to present another stage play, Love & Recession. The play will premiere on a four-day run from 29 December 2016 to 1 January 2017 at AGIP Hall, MUSON Centre, with shows daily at 2 pm and 7 pm.
Adapted from Femi Osofisan’s 1992 adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s ‘A Marriage Proposal’, Love & Recession, a hilarious comedy with intriguing themes, highlights the current harsh economic realities and depicts how many are managing to pull through the challenging times, being resourceful in their own way. It also plays up the need to celebrate the Nigerian heritage vis-à-vis the Nigerian traditional culture and language, the appreciation of which can be harnessed to promote the unity, togetherness, collaboration and partnership needed to build a better Nigeria.
Speaking on the new drama production, Producer and Director, Ifeoma Fafunwa, said Love & Recession is a celebration of the creativity and ingenuity of the Nigerian in addressing challenges without the involvement of external help.
Besides the focus on the current economic downturn, the play featuring Keppy Ekpenyong, Omonor and Ikponmwosa Gold, seeks to draw out social norms such as the pressures on the woman to marry and the pressure on the man to attain certain “economic” status to qualify for marriage. Love & Recession uses comedy and satire to explore these social issues with the aim of inspiring conversations and ultimately effecting changes in perspectives.
