After 20 years, The Beatification of Area Boy written and directed by Professor Wole Soyinka premieres in Nigeria on Tuesday 21st April, 2015 at Freedom Park on Lagos Island.

The Beatification of Area Boy is a satirical play set in the middle of a military dictatorship in Nigeria. Action centres on a day in the life of a rather unusual ‘megadi’ in charge of an upscale plaza that jostles with a slum environment. The megadi not only looks after the plaza but oversees the local habitués, shoppers, and other oddities to the area, among them a disbarred lawyer with a slippery seizure on reality.

The play was published in 1995 during General Abacha season of terror. It was already in the preliminary stages of rehearsal for presentation when Wole Soyinka was strongly urged to take a “political sabbatical”. LBHF organizers are grateful the play is back to where it originally belonged after being presented at Leeds in England and some other European cities in the past 20 years.

A question worth considering after watching this play would be “has much changed since the play was written?”

The performance will be repeated on 22nd and 23rd April 2015  at the same venue – Freedom Park, on Broad Street, Lagos Island, Lagos.

Time – 7pm daily.
