May is starting off packed full with important events, exhibitions and many fun places art and music lovers would love to go.

Satchmo’s Jazz Festival 

If you are just getting the memo, Satchmo’s Jazz Festival starts tomorrow April 30th with their first event at the Oceanview Marquee at Eko Hotel in Lagos. The Jazz festival will continue through the weekend till May 3rd with performances from Jonathan Butler, Somi, Bobby Ricketts, Tunde Jegede & The Nomadic Mystics, HKB FINN, Cleveland Watkiss, Trio Ivoire and Yemi Sax at different venues. The final show is at the Oriental Hotel in Victoria Island on May 3rd.

Some of the events are strictly by invitation while tickets for the open events on April 30th and May 3rd starts from N10,000 for standard tickets to N100,000 for VVIP. Call for ticket reservation at 0802-983-0107 and 0802-983-0108 or email  [email protected] for details.

TKMG Lagos Art Auction 2015 

It’s auction season in Lagos and the first art auction in May by TKMG Auction House is live on May 1st at Terra kulture art gallery. TKMG Auction House is a collaboration between Terra Kulture and Mydrim Gallery since 2010 to promote visual arts from West Africa through sales of selected art pieces. The auction preview started on Sunday April 26th at Terra Kulture and will end by close of work on Thursday April 30th. The auction goes live at 6pm on Friday May 1st at the same venue.


Selected works for the auction comes from both young and seasoned artists using different medium of visual arts including photography. First on the list is Diseye Tantua’s afro pop art piece titled “Bus Stop” up for N300,000 – N500,000 and the last piece, lot #90 is Tunde Owolabi’s photography on giecle print ‘Flames’ in the same auction price range with lot #1. While works by Ablade Glover, Kola Osinowo and Bruce Onobrakpeya rank highest on the list at N2,000,000 – N3,500,000.

Some of the other 62 artists selected from Benin, Ghana and Nigeria are Chief Jimoh Buraimoh, Olatunde Asiru, Abayomi Barber, Tola Wewe, David H. Dale, Sam Ovraiti, Ben Osagie, Mufu Onifade, Duke Asidere, Fidelis Odogwu, Zimpke Dominique, Sallah Barbabe, Francis Uduh, Segun Aiyesan, Adewale Alimi, Oma Cyril, and Uthman Wahab. By middle of May, the 2nd art auction goes live at The Wheatbaker. The pre-auction viewing opens on Saturday, May 9th at 11am – 4pm, Sunday May 10th from 12pm – 6pm and Monday May 11th, 10am – 1pm.

First on the auction main lot is Segun Aiyesan’s oil on canvas ‘Oyin Momo’, signed and dated 2015 up for N1,000,000- N1,200,000. Top works listed for the auction are timeless pieces by El Anatsui, Yusuf Grillo and Ben Enwonwu at N10,000,000 – N18,000,000. Works by Akinola Lasekan, Lamidi Fakeye, Susan Wenger, Bruce Onobrakpeya, Ablade glover, Sokari Douglas Camp, Peju Alatise, Adeola Balogun, Rom isichei, Andrew Esiebo, Victor Ehikhamenor, Diseye Tantua, Modupeola Fadugba, Jacqueline Sowari. Uche Uzorka, Alex Shyngle, Gerry Nnubia, and kelani Abass are also selected for the auction sales.

The auction opens with a mini sales for the eyesight charity “Seeing is Believing” from works donated by Modupeola Fadugba, Tola Wewe, Nike Okudaye Davies and Ogbami Alenosi.
