On Saturday, Art Twenty One presents the exhibition Another Congo, featuring the work of Magnum photographers Alex Majoli and Paolo Pellegrin.
Another Congo is a photography documentary of contemporary life in the Congo, from “urban scenes to great forests and back, reflecting the way it is in most African societies today” as described by novelist and poet, Alain Mabanckou. The acclaimed photojournalists have formed an intimate portrait of Congolese culture through an immersive photographic installation. Another Congo launched during ParisPhoto in Paris, France in November 2014 and traveled to the Rencontres d’Arles photography festival in Arles, France in July 2015.
On the African continent, Art Twenty One is pleased to be the first host of Another Congo with the support of Access Bank and Eko Hotels & Suites.
Alex Majoli (Italy, b. 1971) joined the f45 Studio in Ravenna, Italy at the age of fifteen, working with Daniele Casadio. Since 2001, Majoli has been a full member of Magnum Photos. Majoli has documented diverse subjects including the closure of an insane asylum in Greece, the Taliban in Afghanistan and Iraq, favelas in South America, and a long term project about port cities around the world. He has contributed to publications including Newsweek, The New York Times Magazine, Vanity Fair, and National Geographic. Majoli is the recipient of prestigious awards including the Infinity Award for Photojournalism from the International Center of Photography.
Paolo Pellegrin (Italy, b. 1964) is an award-winning photojournalist who has covered international conflicts and events throughout his distinguished career. Pellegrin has IN ASSOCIATION WITH worked in far reaching countries including Italy, Bosnia, Romania, Mexico, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Cambodia, Albania, Kosovo, Macedonia, Serbia, Lebanon, USA and Japan. Pellegrin has received major accolades for his bodies of work, including ten World Press Photo Awards, the Leica Medal of Excellence, the Olivier Rebbot Award, the Hansel-Meith Pries, and the Robert Capa Award. Pellegrin is a contract photographer for Newsweek magazine in the US and Zeit magazine in Germany. He has published ten books of his work.
The exhibition is accompanied by a limited edition book published by Aperture with a literary contribution by Alain Mabanckou. Another Congo presented by Art Twenty One in association with Cherry Tree Arts Initiatives and it is curated by Daria Birang and produced by Jonathan Roquemore.
The opening date is Saturday 31st October from 6pm – 9pm at Art Twenty One, Eko Hotels & Suites, Lagos. Another Congo exhibition remains open till Monday 30th November, 2015.
