Workshop Date: January 13 – 23, 2016 (excl. Sun, Jan 17)
Time: 9 am – 6 pm
Venue: Goethe-Institut Nigeria German Cultural Centre Lagos, City Hall Catholic Mission Street opposite Holy Cross Cathedral. Lagos Island Lagos.
“VIDEONALE IN LAGOS: Changing City – Shifting Spaces” is a project initiated by the foundation KfW Stiftung, Frankfurt, in cooperation with Goethe-Institut Lagos and Centre of Contemporary Art (CCA), Lagos. It is presented by Videonale Bonn, Germany, and Video Art Network Lagos, Nigeria, and consists of a video art workshop and a subsequent exhibition.
What is the workshop about?
Media Art is relatively young and unexplored in Nigeria. This makes it an ideal moment to expose art students and emerging artists to this art form. The workshop, led by the internationally acclaimed Anglo-Ethiopian video artist Theo Eshetu in collaboration with the artist/curator Jude Anogwih (VAN Lagos), will provide the participants with discursive and applied tools for making eloquent connections between seemingly disparate art forms (sculpture, designs, painting, design and drawing) with video art.
In this intensive practical workshop, participants will learn the fundamentals of media art as they develop methods and processes for creating solo and collaborative experimental video art works. The workshop will further strengthen media art in Nigeria by supporting local up-and-coming talents in establishing international contacts; connect participants with latest developments in contemporary art practice (especially related with digital media and conceptual art); encourage vibrant visual art cooperation between professional and emerging artists in Nigeria; encourage and present young and emerging new media artists in Lagos to the local and international platforms of new media art presentation.
Participants will be exposed to the varied aesthetics, conceptual/contextual strategies and techniques deployed by video artists in the conceptualization and creation of their work. Participants will be invited to develop their own video project, individually or as a team, based on theme of the workshop. What is the outcome? During the workshop participants will be creating a new body of work. A selection of realised works from the workshop will be presented to the public as a part of the forthcoming exhibition VIDEONALE IN LAGOS at the Centre for Contemporary Art Lagos and Freedom Park, Lagos.
What is the topic?
The topic of the workshop is “Changing City – Shifting Spaces”. It is about the politics of public space in Lagos. How does our urban environment affect our (cultural) identity, movements, behaviors and interactions? With these questions in mind the workshop participants will perform different research and artistic activities to approach the urban landscape of the city of Lagos. Who can apply? Participants will be drawn from the art academies, local artist association and the public. Artists working in any media – painting, sculpture, textile, ceramics, photography, video and media and performance art are encouraged to apply.
The workshop addresses emerging artists, yet there is no age restriction. Participants are expected to commit themselves to the given time. It is not possible to attend the workshop part-time. Participants are requested to bring their own technical equipment – camera, computer and any other material/equipment that would assist them during the practical session.
