The list of artists showing at the 58th International Art Exhibition, Venice Biennale, is out. The exhibition will feature 83 artists from around the world, more than thirty per cent of them under the age of 40. There are a number of collaborating artists, including the art collective Slavs and Tatars.
Some of the artists revealed are Njideka Akunyili Crosby (Nigeria/US), Zanele Muholi (South Africa), Michael Armitage (Kenya), Julie Mehretu (Ethiopia), and then, Otobong Nkanga (Nigeria) and Kemang Wa Lehulere (South Africa) who are showing at the Sharjah Biennial 14 which opened yesterday. Although these artists are from the African continent, they live and work in places like Los Angeles, London, New York, and Antwerp, except for Muholi and Wa Lehulere who live in South Africa.
Curated by Ralph Rugoff, the 2019 Venice Biennale “May You Live in Interesting Times”, will open on Saturday, May 11, 2019, after the preview, awards ceremony and inauguration on May 8, 9 and 10.
