An opportunity for emerging artists with at least 3 years of artistic practice working in Nigeria.
ART X Lagos is calling for applications from artists living and working in Nigeria for the 2019 art prize. This initiative implemented annually since the premiere edition of ART X Lagos in 2016, now renamed ‘Access Bank ART X Prize, is designed to support emerging artists who have demonstrated commitment and remarkable growth in their artistic practice.
“ART X believes that supporting such artists will ensure the continued growth of the visual art sector in Nigeria. In the absence of infrastructure that exists in other international centres for contemporary art, the Access Bank ART X Prize was launched to contribute to the burgeoning art sector in Nigeria.”
Applications will be judged by internationally acclaimed artists and practitioners with several years of outstanding industry experience. The jury is comprised of artists – Emeka Ogboh, Zina Saro-Wiwa, Ibrahim Mahama, Wura Natasha Ogunji, and Alessio Antoniolli, director of Gasworks.
The winner will be endowed with the following:
- A cash prize of N1.5 million towards the completion of a project
- A solo presentation of the project at ART X Lagos
- Mentoring and networking support to realize, promote and contextualize the project
- A three-month residency at Gasworks in London in 2020
Eligibility
- Applicants should have at least 3 years of artistic practice
- Not currently enrolled as a student
- Applicants must be a Nigerian citizen, living and working in Nigeria
- Collectives or groups are not eligible for the prize
Requirements
All applications must be submitted online. Submission in any other format will not be accepted. Submission must include:
- A PDF document with:
– A 100-word artist statement
– A 100-word narrative bio
– A 3-paged CV highlighting the last 3 years
– A 250-word proposal of the work in progress to be presented at ART X Lagos
– Contact information for two references – one of which must be based in Nigeria
– Budget detailing expenses incurred till date, outstanding expenses, and income or other monetized support for the project
– Website and Instagram handle (optional)
- Images to be submitted:
– 5 supporting images, no more than 2MB each (These may include images of past work and images related to the proposed project. Complete caption information for each image should be stated as: title, year, medium, dimensions, and any other information.
– Image of studio in current state
– Proof of Nigerian citizenship (Nigerian passport)
